The short answer
The calculator turns a pet’s chronological age into an approximate human-age comparison. That familiar number is only an analogy. The life stage beside it is more useful for organizing observations, preventive-care conversations, and changes worth discussing with a veterinarian.
There is no single equation that measures a dog or cat’s true “human age.” Species develop differently, dogs of different adult sizes diverge with time, and individual health cannot be reduced to a birthday. For that reason, every result says about, approximate, or uses a capped value such as 123+.
What you enter
The calculator uses species, whole years, and months. Dogs also need an expected adult-size group:

Use the closest expected adult size, not today’s exact weight. For a mixed-breed dog with uncertain adult size, choose the best practical estimate and treat the result as a broad comparison.
Cat age anchors
The cat model follows the AAHA/Zoetis physiological age chart. Early development is fast, so it uses several anchors before age two.

That produces 28 at age 3, 32 at age 4, and continues to 100 at age 21. Ages above 21 use the same four-year extension, but the result is flagged as lower confidence because it extends beyond the main source chart.
Dog age by adult size
The dog model follows the size groups in the AAHA/Zoetis chart. The first two annual anchors are the same across sizes; differences become larger later.

For a giant dog older than 16, the calculator stops at 123+ instead of inventing increasingly precise values outside the table.
How months are handled
The input becomes years + months / 12. Between two known annual anchors, the calculator uses a straight-line interpolation and rounds the visible result to the nearest whole number. For example, a cat aged 1 year 6 months sits halfway between the age-one and age-two anchors.
Interpolation makes month input feel continuous. It does not claim that biological aging happens in a straight line. A dog younger than one uses a very rough puppy-development estimate between zero and the first annual anchor.
How life stages are assigned
The cat stages follow the AAHA/AAFP framework:

For dogs, AAHA describes stages by developmental characteristics and the last portion of expected lifespan rather than fixed birthdays. My Petland uses the following transparent, size-based product estimates so the tool can return a consistent stage:

These dog boundaries are not breed-level medical judgments. Growth and later-life timing vary, especially among larger dogs. A veterinarian may place an individual pet differently based on breed, body condition, health history, behavior, and examination.
Why we do not use ×7
Multiplying every dog year by seven is memorable, but it treats development as uniform. A one-year-old dog is already far beyond the development of a seven-year-old child, and adult-size differences become more visible later. The chart therefore uses early anchors and then separates the size groups.
Why we do not use one DNA formula for every dog
A widely discussed DNA methylation study compared age-related changes in 104 Labrador retrievers with humans. It is useful research about shared patterns, but one breed sample is not a universal age calculator for every dog. My Petland does not stretch that formula beyond the population studied.
Limits that matter
Chronological age is only one part of care. Breed, genetics, adult size, health history, body and muscle condition, nutrition, environment, and observed change can all matter. The calculator does not determine biological age, predict lifespan, diagnose disease, or set a treatment plan.
